The Double Consciousness By. B Du Bois - 1651 Words

The â€Å"double consciousness† coined by W.E.B Du Bois, became a popular ideology during the Harlem Renaissance to depict conflicting identities of the black community. Du Bois understood the historical context of black immigration from rural to urban areas would cause problems for those who wanted to create a better life for themselves. Many of the black men who moved to the north were â€Å"untrained and poorly educated.† Du Bois attempted to formulate his theory of identity with race, ethnicity, and culture. With the formation of the split identity in combination with intersectionality, the struggle with forced assimilation cultural, racial, and ethnic identity has been built into the system of oppression in the black community. Du Bois hopes that the concept of the double consciousness conceptualizes black agency as well as raises awareness and gains power through the resistance. In doing so, will conflict subjectivity within whiteness and black inferiority, even tually deconstructing white western ideology. The problem with the theory of double consciousness is that Du Bois cannot fully dismiss white ideology because his identity is comprised of white education and cultural appropriation.† Deconstructing western ideology is problematic when black writers and intellectuals like Du Bois are fighting for authentic blackness and are also practicing western theory that derives from the non-European origin. The Harlem movement would have to become a universal phenomenon,Show MoreRelatedB Du Bois s Theory Of Double Consciousness1933 Words   |  8 Pagesreaction at all; doing so I would compare this act to W.E.B Du Bois s theory of double consciousness. Textbook Case Study Off-the-Job Behavior 1. Do you believe Oiler’s employee rights were violated? Explain your position. Peter Oiler’s termination from his job by the Winn-Dixie Corporation was an obvious violation of his employee rights. We will write a custom essay sample on Off-the-Job Behavior or any similar topic only for you Order Now Though balancing employee rights with proper discipline is a constant challenge for HR professionals. But in this case of Oiler, the work place behavior of the employer had not changed and there is no problem, with the co-employers also. Also in the own time, the company have no rights about the way he dress. Hence there is also no such challenge for the Winn-Dixie that it has to terminate Oiler. Hence I would consider that Winn-Dixie has violated the employee rights of Oiler. Also his social security has been compromised. When we consider the situation here is more normal than a similar case in 2005, which happened in Georgia. According to that, the courts consider this as sexual discrimination under 42 U. S. C. Sec. 1983 and Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. And the development of trans-gender transitions has a real concern and the laws accept the claims of discrimination under employer’s categorizing of genders. Thus Oiler’s claim is acceptable and Winn-Dixie has to oblige to the claims of Oiler. Here Oiler’s can be taken as an example of opposition of trans-genders in the general public. Though the laws are guarding them, the manipulation of thought caused by these cases is more than the actual violation. Since the court ruled out as not a violation, it will be a wrong guideline as the decision can be referenced in consecutive references. . What do you see as the consequences of organizations that punish employees for certain off-the-job behaviors? Explain. In the case of punishment of the employees, the people have united against this unrightfully action. Also it had created an uneasy environment among the workers. Most organizations which do the punishment of workers for off-job behaviors as they feel as their ri ght, run the risk of being faced with numerous lawsuits and allegations of partiality and discriminatory practices. Hence these organizations end up with a bad reputation and a question mark for credibility. Which in turn costs, they also face losing customers, business partners and stockholders. There will be a greater number of individuals who do not agree with these abrupt decisions than who support it. Hence they will decide to cut their ties with organizations who favor such practices. It would be safe to assume that many businesses that were previously a part of the Winn-Dixie organizations like financial institutions, suppliers etc. ade the decision to no longer be associated with a company that would practice such unethical and immoral standards of business. This will in turn destroy the past achievement and the support it had earned and also future trades with other organization is also threatened. Hence it completely obliterates the potential success of any business or organization. Any business organization must have rules and regulations which must be followed to and by all employees. Additionally, businesses must have particular methods in place to discipline individuals who do not follow the rules. 3. Would you consider Winn-Dixie an organization that exhibits characteristics of progressive discipline or the hot stove approach? Defend your position. According to me, Winn-Dixie is an organization which exhibits hot stove characteristics. This can be made on seeing the action taken by Winn-Dixie. Oiler has a clean organizational behavior and has a perfect work record. His career track record is also proper and he is considered as an asset by all the workers. When we consider about the harshness of the Disciplinary action, terminating the employee is considered as a most severe disciplinary action. And the Winn-Dixie had done this, hence it is a Hot stove characteristic. The hot-stove approach punishes all unacceptable behaviors with identical disciplinary actions whereas the progressive approach, warns individuals depending on the harshness and/or the reoccurrence of actions and behaviors which they have previously been warned against. The severe disciplinary action can be taken for an offense is so serious that immediate dismissal is appropriate such as theft, sexual harassment, violence, plagiarism etc. And since the person involved has not done anything, hence he should not be taken severe discipline. Also before taking a decision of terminating the employee, the company neither talked to Oiler for an explanation nor it has given Oiler a verbal warning so that he can be more careful in future. Thus it had taken the action immediately and without giving time to Oiler for confirming his position or giving any explanation. Hence Winn-Dixie is following hot stove procedure in disciplinary actions. How to cite Off-the-Job Behavior, Papers

Engineering Skills for Cooperation and Innovation- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theEngineering Skills for Cooperation and Innovation. Answer: Introduction The purpose of the topic is to state that how the leaders of engineering demonstrate their leadership qualities. The examples of the two eminent leaders are being taken into account that has proved them quite fit for the tasks they did. The engineering strategies they followed in the field of acceptance, cooperation and innovation. These are the important elements that have been taken into account while addressing the key skills of the engineers. Another most important objective that needs to be addressed is the communication based strategy with the team members. A project leader of a company needs to develop a communication plan in order to communicate the various strategies and skills to the other team members working in the different time zones. Thus, these are basic skills that an engineer leader must develop in order to fulfill a successful group project. Examples of Engineering leaders and their strategies Acceptance of risks and failures and making staffs learn Jessica McKeller from MIT followed certain important strategies to meet up the risks and failures by making the staffs learn about it. Jessica Mckeller believed in the strategy of Risk Assessment (Brown, 2012). It is the responsibility of the leader to search for any solution to cure them. This incorporates indicating the hazards which are potential in nature and pointing out the ways it could harm people. Even if the project goes awry, the leader must encourage the team workers for pointing out the problems and reduce them in the next projects. The major strategy in this case which was followed by Jessica Mckeller is that trying to maintain a balance of cooperation between the less experiences engineers and more experiences engineers (Brown, 2012). Opportunities were built which are truly bi directional. With the implementation of the balance, the new engineers generally do not tend to accept the things which are broken and good engineers believe in maintaining discipline and work o n the failed projects. Steve Jobs, the founder of the apple company, never felt like the CEO of the company should not believe in the changing of the products are to be done frequently; it says that a company is not thinking enough about the change in product and the community, this would led to the failure of the projects. According to Steve Jobs, risk is regarded to be uncomfortable (Goetsch, Davis, 2014) However, when the leaders start encouraging the dreams, the workers under the leaders start getting inspirations. The progresses are always not regarded to be linear. Bumps would be there along the way. The engineering strategies followed by the leader where the leader needs to be quite transparent in giving the feedbacks. According to Jobs, risk assessment should be done in such a way that it points out the types of bumps in front of the success of the projects (Issacson, 2012). Steve Jobs was never afraid to take risks and by following certain strategies, he was confident enough to accept the failure s and encourage the staffs to do their works accordingly. Building Teams and Retaining Innovators According to Jessica Mckeller, an engineer leader must have ideas about peoples daily and yearly strategies. A responsibility of the leader is to shape their experience. This incorporates meeting the new people on a daily basis and wages an interaction with them. In order to build a winning team, a good engineering leader at fist needs to know about the action plan (Goetsch, Davis 2014) The action would further encourage the leaders to give inspirations to the staffs and make them aware about the workings of the project. The action plans are needed to be communicated efficiently to the staffs. Jessica Mckeller while writing a code for a project made the staffs understand about its importance and made built a team. The local experts were also built in the team who has ideas to guide the discussions based on architecture (Goetsch, Davis 2014; Kirschenman, 2012). With the success of the project, the team would eventually attract the innovators and give encouragement to the existing in novators to work for the company, where they can be able to prove their qualities. Steve Jobs, always looked forward to build up a winning team. Jobs followed the strategy where the members while working together, would keep the negative attitude in check for each other. This had enabled the company more to achieve successful requirements of an industry (Issacson, 2012). In the technique lines, the team needs to be aware of the coding and decoding. Proper implementation of the coding and decoding procedures, would lead to the development of a good team work. In order to retain the innovators, the leader needs to have ideas about the changing demand of the people and accordingly such team members would be encouraged enough to contribute in the field of innovations (Issacson, 2012). The success of such innovations would lead to the retaining of such innovators in the company. Passion for Mission Jessica McKeller believed in a better team work where a balance could be maintained between the staff members. Under a hopeful leader, it should be feasible enough to respond to the construction of the project (Rajilich, 2013; Downing, 2012). In that case Jessica believed in the motivation that needs to be rendered to the working staffs of the company in order to face the challenges boldly. For the successful running of the business, the passion to cooperate with each other, sharing information with the staffs, thinking better for the running of the company and a changed individual must carry the responsibility to take care of the passion or motto of the successful running of the company (Rajilich, 2013). The engineer leader also believes in having an independent coach who could encourage the workers in the technical lines to develop skills and also encourage contributions. Steve Jobs believe that people who are having the passion carry the capacity to bring changes in the world. It is the secret of success to entrepreneurship. Steve Jobs described that Apple believes in the core value that people having passion can bring transformation in the world. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the engineer leaders to build confidence of the staff and encourage them to achieve mission properly (Blank, 2013). Setting up communication plan through Video Conferencing Reaching the key audiences: For the Project called Hytrants, the different team members are being allocated in the different time zones. Therefore in order to reach them, video conferencing would be the best option to discuss about the subject matter of the projects (Miklos et al., 2016; Furht, 2012). Indentifying the key messages: The key messages have to be discussed with the team members regarding the objectives and further improvements to bring in the aims of the project. The key audiences over here are the project members who are working on the particular project. Framing out a strategic outreach goal: The messages for the project have to be carried out by the video conferencing. Video conferencing is a modern way to reach the key audiences residing in the different time zones (Miklos et al., 2016; Furht, 2012). Chalking out the materials: The materials for the video conferencing need to be developed which gives the detailed description of the project. This needs to be carried out more efficiently. The communicator needs to specify the points that are needed to be discussed with the key audiences of the project work and how the project would gradually benefit the audiences accordingly. A timeline has to be specified: The team members who are residing in the different time zones, it is important to coordinate with them and set up a timeline which would make the members available to carry out the effective mode of communication. A timeline of a country might not match the timeline of another country. Therefore, it is important to take into notice the different modes of timelines and set a particular time line framework in order to carry out the work (Miklos et al., 2016; Furht, 2012). Communicating the results: It is important to consider the communication with the key members after the research work of the project is completed. This communication template is different from the traditional template on the basis of telephonic and email. The detailed communication through the process of email becomes difficult as the team members availability to answer the emails are not being possible. Therefore, the team members found it difficult in the dispersed project to carry out a detailed conversation through the email system. The only change that has been made in terms of drafting communication plan is the mode of communication and other than that the presentation of the materials and the approaches other than the subject matter remained the same (Miklos et al., 2016; Furht, 2012). A face to face conversation A face to face conversation makes easier to sense what a person is thinking actually. It becomes easier for the person to reflect on the ways of thinking about the project. The face to face communication creates a bond between the communicator and the team member which would build a trust in each other regarding the working of the project. A face to face conversation would enable the speakers to learn about the difficulties involved in the project works. A face to face understanding helps to come up with the important strategies about the project (Dunkan Fiske, 2015; Ekmen, Friesen Elseworth, 2013). If meeting in person in a team is not possible then a leader must allocate a time and do video conferencing to make the communication strategy easier to carry out. Other than this, contacting the person through social networking sites is also the easier way to communicate with the person in terms of project (Chang, 2012). References Blank, S. (2013). The sentiments that Houellebecq airs, either through his characters or his narrative voice, frequently suggest, at the really least, borderline-paranoid rightist disdain for feminism, sexual freedom and youth civilization. One character even tries composing deadly racialist literature, although he finally decides it’s merely a cockamamie stage he’s traveling through. Houellebecq has been attacked as a ultraconservative, and Atomised got him thrown off the column board of the leftist review Perpendiculaires. He’s no ultraconservative, he insists, although there’s a touch of sophism to his defense mechanism. â€Å"A ultraconservative is person who wants to return to a old province – that’s neer a possibility in my books. For me, everything’s irreversible in the life of a society, every bit good as an individual’s.† Reputedly a former Marxist, Houellebecq claims he neer truly was one, and that these year ss he has no political place at all. â€Å"I don’t think political relations is that of import. Belief systems and technological revolutions are of import, but I don’t believe political determinations have the slightest consequence on events.† Both on and off the page, Houellebecq likes to offer such dry aggravations, as if make bolding you to think whether he truly has any difficult sentiments at all. â€Å"Any groups with a strong political orientation – communists or Catholics – will be split for and against me. That’s merely normal. You couldn’t agree ideologically with the whole of Atomised.† So is he merely a compulsive position-shifter, out to perplex and antagonize every possible cantonment? â€Å"No, I’d much instead everyone agreed with me. But it’s non up to me to do a measure towards others – it’s up to everyone else to come closer to me.† If Houellebecq is frequently confused with his characters, it is partially because their lifes overlap. Born on the isle of Reunion, Houellebecq, like the brothers in Atomised, was the boy of parents who pursued the hippy dream in the 60s and left him with his grandparents. The extravagant female parent in Atomised appears to be based on his ain ; when I ask if there’s an component of retaliation in the novel, he mutters a crisp â€Å"Yes. Definitely† . Like the hero of Whatever, he worked in computing machine admin, and suffered the stultifying effects of Gallic office life. â€Å"It’s non merely deep ennui. Along with the ennui, you’re obliged to sham enthusiasm. That’s what’s truly painful.† Like more than one of his characters, he had several depressive enchantments in mental infirmary, although, he claims, â€Å"I chiefly went to the head-shrinker to acquire clip off work. The job is, the people in the infirmaries are so much more interesting that sometimes you don†™t want to come out once more. Those topographic points suit me instead good – they’re non nerve-racking, and you can smoke every bit much as you like.† Houellebecq’s airs of bloody-minded intolerance has made him an improbable pop-culture star. He late released a Cadmium, Presence Humaine, on which he intones his poems Gainsbourg-style over Lou Reed-esque backup paths. A movie of Extension du Domaine de la Lutte was besides released last twelvemonth. Although it bombed in France ( excessively near to the book, some complained ) , it is more than respectable, and features the formidable sight of manager Philippe Harel in the lead, making a spot-on imitation of Houellebecq, nicotine fingers and all. Houellebecq packed in his computing machine occupation two old ages ago. He now lives in Dublin, and travels to Lanzarote ( the scene of his following book ) and Thailand ( the 1 after that ) . He has besides remarried, which suggests he is non wholly heartsic k about the possibility of love. He shrugs. â€Å"Given a person’s yesteryear, it’s normally bound to stop severely, but sometimes it can travel right.† For a apparently retiring misanthropist, this converted rock-star raver seems to hold taken to fame with singular assuredness. â€Å"I don’t suffer onslaughts of inordinate modestness, † he says. He admits that he has been affected by the emphasis of his new life. â€Å"I’m more impatient. Before, I was calm to the point of apathy.† So can his fans be reassured that his mentality hasn’t been precisely sweetened by success? â€Å"I don’t truly experience pessimistic, † he says. â€Å"Just realistic.†Atomised is published by Heinemann, monetary value? 12.99.
